Aunt Flo

Hello, I am Harvey's Aunt Flo.

I am in charge of the design of the new garden. My biggest challenge will be to stop those little pests Lugs and Freeway from digging up my flower and vegetable beds.

With the much milder climate than in Wolverhampton, I am able to grow a wide variety of plants outdoors which I could not do in the UK.

There is a wide variety of native plants for me to consider. I will certainly be using some of the large ferns such as the Silver Fern (Cyathea Dealbata - New Zealand's emblem) and Wheki, as well as native trees such as Rimu, Kowhai, Lancewood, Kauri and Totara. Many of these will be in the 'Bush Walk' I am planning.

We will be trying to attract the bird life such as Tui with Flax which has some wonderful flowers.

For food (and drink) I shall include citrus fruits such as Mandarin Orange, Lemon and Lime.

There will be a Japanese section to fit in with the Bonsai display area

Vegetable plots and a large lawn - for Peter to play on his ride on mower

At the end of September 2005 we had nine trees cut down to make way for the drive. The wood will be used either as firewood or for Bonsai stands. This still leaves plenty of trees to screen us from the neighbours and act as a windbreak.

Over the 06 Easter break, Ann planted 103 Photinia 'Red Robin' to form a hedge between us and one of our neighbours. These plants have lovely red new growth and are a favourite for hedging in New Zealand.
Part of the grass has been killed off and bark put down. This is going to be one of the flower beds.
At the top of the garden, Ann and Peter have put up a small hothouse for their bonsai.
Most of the branches we have cut down from the trees have been chipped by Peter . This big pile went in less than a day.

With the arrival if Jaz and Maxie I have had to modify my original plans. We now have a fenced off area round the back of the house where the dogs can play whilst Peter and Ann are at work. We have also put in another fence to make the main grass area around the house a little more private. We have planted Jasmine and other climbers to hide the wire fence.

The 28 trees along the driveway have now come down and we are slowly planting specemin trees and hedging as well as expanding the flower beds and vegetable plots.
